12-Week Youth Football Session Plans
Planning a whole term of training is hard work. A structured 12-week plan takes the guesswork out of it — here's how a good one works, and how to run one.
Why a 12-week plan works
Development doesn't come from random sessions — it comes from structured, progressive training over time. A 12-week plan gives young players a clear pathway, building each skill on the last, so they improve steadily across the term.
What a good 12-week plan includes
A strong programme covers the full picture over the term:
- Technical skills — first touch, passing, dribbling, finishing.
- Small-sided games to apply the skills.
- Simple tactical ideas appropriate to the age.
- A logical progression — each week builds on the last.
- Fun and variety so players stay engaged.
How to run it
Follow the plan week by week, but stay flexible — if players need longer on a skill, take it. Keep every session active, game-based and enjoyable. Review at the end of each week: did they enjoy it, did they improve?
Why structure beats improvising
Turning up and 'having a kickabout' wastes the limited time you have. A planned term develops players far faster and runs more smoothly — and it's far less stressful for you as a coach.
