1v1 Attacking Drills: Coach Players to Beat Their Man

A player who can beat their man 1v1 changes games. They break down packed defences, create chances from nothing, and force defenders into panic. But confident 1v1 attacking has to be coached and practised. Here’s how.

Why 1v1 attacking matters

Modern defences are organised and hard to pass through. Often the only way to break them is a player who can beat an opponent one-on-one — dribbling past the full-back, running at a centre-back, committing defenders and creating space. Every team needs players brave enough to take their man on, and it’s a skill you can develop in every age group.

Attack the defender, don’t just run

Teach attackers to run AT the defender with the ball under control, not aimlessly. Getting close forces the defender to commit — and the moment they do, the attacker exploits it. Coach players to be positive: take defenders on, don’t just pass sideways.

Change of pace is the killer

The best 1v1 players aren’t always the quickest — they’re the ones who change speed. Slow to draw the defender in, then explosive to burst past. Drill the two-speed dribble: control at walking pace, then accelerate away sharply. That change is what beats defenders, not raw speed.

A few reliable moves

Players don’t need a hundred tricks — they need two or three moves they trust. A simple stepover, a cut inside onto the stronger foot, a knock-and-go past the defender’s side. Drill these until they’re automatic and can be done at speed under pressure.

Drills that build 1v1 attacking

1v1 to goal from a pass; 1v1 to gates or a line to reward beating the defender; small-sided games with a rule that you must beat a man before you can score; dribbling gauntlets against passive then active defenders. Always progress from unopposed to fully live so the skill transfers.

Build confidence, accept mistakes

Players will lose the ball taking others on — that’s part of learning. Coach a culture where trying to beat your man is encouraged, not punished. Confidence is the 1v1 attacker’s biggest weapon; protect it, and your players will express themselves.
