Why 4v4 develops better players
The magic of 4v4 — like all small-sided games — is involvement. Fewer players and less space mean the ball finds every child constantly, and it's touches, decisions and repetition that build footballers. 4V4 is especially good for touches, teamwork and the diamond shape.

How to set up a 4v4 session
A 30×20m pitch with a goal at each end. Two teams of four, no goalkeepers. Encourage a diamond shape (one back, two wide, one forward) but don't force positions — let it emerge.
Coaching 4v4: what matters
Introduce the idea of supporting a team-mate — 'give them two options' — while keeping the freedom and fun of small-sided play.
Keep games short and restart quickly — a fast tempo keeps everyone busy and engaged. Rotate players and teams so nobody stands out for long, and always finish on a game and plenty of encouragement.
Progressions to keep it challenging
Once the basic game is flowing, add simple constraints to raise the challenge: a two-touch limit to speed up play, a bonus goal for scoring after a set number of passes, or a directional target to encourage playing forward. Small tweaks change the whole focus without changing the game your players already know.
