7V7 Football: The Complete Coaching Guide
7v7 is the stepping stone to the full game. Real positions, a bigger pitch and team shape appear — but with far more touches and involvement than 11-a-side, making it the ideal place to learn how to play as a unit.
What is 7v7 football?
7v7 is the stepping stone to the full game. Real positions, a bigger pitch and team shape appear — but with far more touches and involvement than 11-a-side, making it the ideal place to learn how to play as a unit.
Recommended pitch size: around 55 × 37 m. Typical age group: Under 9 to Under 11.
Why 7v7 develops better players
The magic of 7v7 — like all small-sided games — is involvement. Fewer players and less space mean the ball finds every child constantly, and it's touches, decisions and repetition that build footballers. 7V7 is especially good for positioning, shape and team roles.
- Real positions and team shape — defenders, midfielders, forwards
- Width and depth matter across a bigger pitch
- Transitions over longer distances build game understanding
- Prepares players for 9v9 and 11-a-side without losing involvement
How to set up a 7v7 session
A 55×37m pitch with goals and goalkeepers. Two teams of seven, typically a 2-3-1 or 3-2-1 shape. This is the standard U9–U11 format in England and many other nations.
Coaching 7v7: what matters
Introduce positional responsibility and team shape, but keep coaching the individual skills and decisions — 7v7 is still a developmental format, not a results one.
Keep games short and restart quickly — a fast tempo keeps everyone busy and engaged. Rotate players and teams so nobody stands out for long, and always finish on a game and plenty of encouragement.
Progressions to keep it challenging
Once the basic game is flowing, add simple constraints to raise the challenge: a two-touch limit to speed up play, a bonus goal for scoring after a set number of passes, or a directional target to encourage playing forward. Small tweaks change the whole focus without changing the game your players already know.
