9v9 Football: The Bridge to 11-a-Side

9v9 is the step between 7v7 and the full game — a crucial stage where players learn real shape and positions. Here's how to coach it and get the most from it.

Where 9v9 fits

Played around ages 11–12, 9v9 bridges the gap between 7v7 and 11-a-side. The pitch is bigger, there are more positions, and players start to learn genuine team shape — but it's not yet the full complexity of eleven-a-side. It's a brilliant stage for developing tactical understanding.

Making the most of the stage

Use the extra space to teach players to scan, switch play and pick the right pass. Encourage building from the back, and coach the shape both with and without the ball. Players who learn good habits at 9v9 arrive at 11-a-side far better prepared.
