Age-Specific Football Coaching
What you coach a six-year-old is worlds apart from what you coach a sixteen-year-old. Here's a practical guide to what matters at each age — and how to pitch your sessions right.
Why age matters so much
Coaching the right thing at the right age is one of the biggest factors in player development. Push too much too soon and you lose them; pitch it right and they thrive. Here's what to prioritise at each stage.
Ages 5–8: Foundation
Everything is a game. Focus on touches, dribbling, and above all fun. Lots of ball each, lots of scoring, lots of encouragement. Don't drill technique for its own sake — let them fall in love with the game.
- Maximum touches — a ball each wherever possible.
- Dribbling and 1v1s build confidence and skill.
- Fun first — a child who loves it will keep improving.
Ages 9–12: Development
Players are ready for the first real teamwork — passing combinations, support play, and simple decisions. Small-sided games are perfect. Introduce ideas gently, keep it game-based.
Ages 13–16: Youth
Position-specific skills, tactical understanding and the physical side start to matter. Players can handle more structure, more tactical detail and more demanding sessions — but keep it enjoyable.
Ages 16–18 and beyond
Advanced technical work, pressing, transitions and full match-realistic coaching. Players are ready for the complete game and the demands that come with it.
Manuals for every age and level
