Ball Mastery Drills for Football

Ball mastery is the foundation every other skill is built on. These drills develop close control, coordination and confidence with both feet — perfect for warm-ups and homework.

Why ball mastery matters

Before a player can dribble, turn or beat a defender, they need to be comfortable with the ball at their feet. Ball mastery drills build that comfort through thousands of small, controlled touches — and they're brilliant for developing both feet.

Drill 1: Sole rolls and taps

Rolling the ball side to side with the sole, and tapping it between both feet. Simple, repeatable, and perfect for a warm-up or a few minutes at home. Build up the speed as control improves.

Drill 2: Inside-outside touches

Moving the ball with the inside then outside of the same foot, travelling forward through a line of cones. Builds close control and coordination.

Drill 3: Foundation moves on the move

Combine the touches while dribbling through a grid. Add changes of direction and pace. This bridges ball mastery into real dribbling.

Coaching points

Ball mastery is perfect for individual practice and homework. Encourage players to do a few minutes daily — it's the single best way to improve their relationship with the ball.
