The Attention Span Crisis: Coaching the TikTok Generation

Today’s young players grew up on fast, visual, on-demand content — and it’s changed how they learn. The coach who lectures for five minutes has lost the room. Here’s how to hold the attention of the modern player and coach them the way they actually take in information.

Understand how modern players learn

Digitally-native kids are used to short, fast, visual information. That’s not a flaw to fix — it’s a reality to coach around. Long verbal explanations lose them. Quick demonstrations, visual cues and getting them active fast keep them engaged. Work with how they learn, not against it.

Cut the talking, show don’t tell

The classic mistake is stopping the session to lecture. Modern players tune out after a sentence or two. Replace long explanations with a quick demonstration — show the picture, don’t describe it — and get them back playing. If you must talk, keep it to one clear point, then move.

Keep the tempo high

Standing in lines is the enemy of engagement. Design sessions with constant activity — small groups, lots of touches, quick transitions between activities. A high-tempo session gives short attention spans no time to wander, and kids leave buzzing rather than bored.

Use visual triggers and cues

Instead of long coaching points, use simple visual triggers — a coloured cone that means “switch play,” a raised hand that means “press.” Players respond to clear, instant cues far better than to paragraphs of instruction. It keeps the game flowing and the learning embedded in the play.

Make it fun and competitive

Engagement soars when there’s a challenge. Add scoring, races, and small competitions to almost any drill and watch the focus sharpen. Kids who are competing don’t get bored — and they don’t notice they’re learning.

Plan for engagement, not just content

The best modern sessions are designed around holding attention, not just delivering drills. That takes planning — quick transitions, minimal standing, built-in games. Ready-made, well-structured session plans make this far easier, so coaches spend their energy engaging players rather than scrambling for the next activity.
