Coaching Different Ages and Abilities: A Beginner's Guide
A session that's perfect for under-8s would bore a team of fifteen-year-olds — and overwhelm a group of five-year-olds. Adapting to the age and ability in front of you is a core coaching skill. Here's how to get it right as a new coach.
Why age and ability change everything
Children develop at different rates, and what works brilliantly at one age falls flat at another. Younger players need fun, lots of touches and simple instructions. Older players can handle tactics, structure and more detail. Match your session to the group in front of you and everyone stays engaged and improves.
Youngest players (5-8): fun and the ball
For the youngest, it's all about fun and touches. Give every child a ball as often as possible, keep activities short and game-like, use their imagination ('dribble like a snake'), and keep instructions to one simple idea at a time. Avoid queues and long explanations — at this age, enjoyment is development.
Developing players (9-12): skills and small games
Now you can build core skills — passing, dribbling, first touch — through small-sided games and more structured drills. Players can handle a couple of coaching points and a bit more challenge. Keep it active and fun, but start introducing the 'why' behind what they're doing.
Teenagers (13-16): challenge and respect
Teenagers want to be challenged and treated with respect. Introduce tactics, positions and game understanding. Involve them in decisions, ask their opinions, and avoid treating them like children. This is also the age many drop out, so keeping it enjoyable and meaningful matters more than ever.
Adapt for ability within a group
Even in one team, abilities vary. Stronger players need harder challenges; less confident ones need success to build belief. Simple tweaks — a bigger or smaller area, a two-touch rule for advanced players, more time for those developing — keep everyone challenged at their own level within the same drill.
The same drill, adjusted
You rarely need completely different drills — just adjust the one you're running. Make the area bigger or smaller, add or remove a rule, change the numbers. A good coach takes one activity and dials the difficulty up or down to suit the age and ability in front of them.
Use age-banded resources
You don't have to work all this out alone. DRILLPITCH manuals and sessions are organised by age and ability, with age-appropriate drills and coaching points already set at the right level — so you always have a session that fits the players in front of you.
