Coaching Your Own Child: How to Get It Right

Coaching a team that includes your own son or daughter is one of the most common ways people fall into coaching — and one of the trickiest to get right. Handled well, it's a brilliant shared experience. Here's how to keep it that way.

Treat them the same as everyone else

The biggest trap is being harder on your own child to prove you're not favouring them — or being softer without realising. Aim for exactly the same treatment as every other player: same praise, same standards, same substitutions. Fairness is what both your child and the other parents will notice.

Mind the car ride home

The journey home is where many young players fall out of love with the game. Resist the urge to review the match, list mistakes, or give feedback. Your child needs a parent in that car, not a coach. A simple "did you enjoy that?" is worth more than any tactical debrief.

Separate the roles

On the pitch, you're the coach. Off it, you're mum or dad. Try to keep those roles clear — your child needs to know that when the session ends, the coaching ends too. Some coaches even use a small signal: "coach hat off now." Whatever works, make the switch obvious.

Watch for extra pressure

Children of coaches often feel they have to perform to make their parent proud. Keep reassuring your child that you love watching them play regardless of how it goes. Take the pressure off, and they'll play with more freedom — and enjoy it far more.

Enjoy the rare gift

For all the challenges, coaching your own child gives you something most parents never get: hours of shared time doing something you both love, memories that last long after the final whistle. Keep it fun, keep it fair, and enjoy every minute of it.
