Coaching Youth Soccer: A Complete Guide for New Coaches

Just taken on a youth team? Whether you volunteered or got roped in, coaching kids’ football is hugely rewarding — and a bit daunting at first. This guide covers everything a new youth coach needs to run great sessions and develop happy, improving players.

Your first job: make it fun

Kids who enjoy football keep playing football. Fun isn’t the opposite of learning — it’s how kids learn best. Games, plenty of touches on the ball, small teams, lots of goals and minimal standing in lines. If your players leave with a smile and a sweat, you’re doing it right. Drop the long queues and the laps.

Give every child a ball

At young ages, development comes from touches. The more each child interacts with the ball, the faster they improve. Design sessions where every player has a ball as often as possible, and use small-sided games rather than big-team drills where some kids barely get a kick.

Plan simple, progressive sessions

A good youth session has a shape: a fun ball-based warm-up, a main activity that builds a theme (dribbling, passing, shooting), and a small-sided game to finish. Keep it simple — one clear topic per session — and progressive, starting easy and adding challenge. You don’t need to be complicated to be effective.

Coach the individual, not just the team

At youth level, winning matters far less than developing every player. Rotate positions so kids experience the whole game, give quieter players as much attention as the stars, and measure success by improvement, not the scoreline. The results take care of themselves over time.

Manage the sideline

Youth coaching is as much about people as football — parents, behaviour, confidence. Set simple standards, communicate clearly with parents, and stay calm and positive on match day. Kids play their best when they feel safe to make mistakes, so be the encouraging voice, not the shouting one.

Use your time wisely

Most youth coaches are volunteers with day jobs and little time to plan. Ready-made, age-appropriate session plans take the planning burden away, so you turn up prepared and spend your energy coaching rather than scrambling for ideas. That’s exactly what DRILLPITCH is built for.
