Combination Play Drills for Football

The best teams play through defences with quick combinations. These drills coach the one-two, the overlap and the third-man run that unlock organised defences.

Why combinations unlock defences

No individual can break down a well-organised defence as reliably as two or three players combining. These drills build the partnerships and timing that play through the lines.

Drill 1: The one-two (wall pass)

Two players practise the give-and-go: pass, run past the defender, receive the return. The most fundamental combination in football. Coach the timing and the run after the pass.

Drill 2: The overlap and underlap

One player carries the ball, another runs beyond (overlap) or inside (underlap) to create a 2v1. Coach the timing of the run and the decision of the ball carrier.

Drill 3: The third-man run

A pass to one player sets up a pass to a third arriving at pace — the hardest run for defenders to track. Practise it in a small group, then in a game.

Coaching points

Build these in small-sided games where the combinations appear naturally and often. Reward players for playing through the defence, not just around it.
