Dribbling Drills for Football
Great dribblers change games. These dribbling drills build close control, feints and the confidence to take players on and beat them one-on-one.
What makes a good dribbler
Dribbling is close control plus courage plus a change of pace. The trick isn't the fancy skill — it's the acceleration after it. These drills build all of it, from control to beating a real defender.
Drill 1: Close control through cones
Dribble through a line of cones using small touches with both feet. Build up speed as control improves. The foundation of everything.
- Small, quick touches — keep the ball close.
- Use both feet and all surfaces.
- Head up between touches to see the picture.
Drill 2: The feint and go
Practise one simple move — a step-over, drag-back or body feint — then explode away. Coach the change of pace: the move sets the defender up, the acceleration beats them.
Drill 3: Beat your man 1v1
A live 1v1 to a gate or small goal. The attacker uses control and a feint to beat the defender. This is dribbling under real pressure — where it counts.
- Attack the defender's front foot.
- Change of pace beats the defender, not the trick.
- Keep the ball close through the move.
Coaching points
Encourage players to try things and fail — dribbling is built on courage, and a player afraid to lose the ball never becomes a dribbler. Praise the attempt.
