Finishing Drills for Football
Chances are wasted without finishing. These finishing drills build clean striking technique, composure and the habits that turn chances into goals.
What makes a good finisher
Great finishing is about technique and composure, not just power. These drills groove a clean strike, then add the pressure and decisions of a real game so it holds up on match day.
Drill 1: Striking technique
A player strikes a stationary then a moving ball at goal from the edge of the box. Coach the fundamentals: plant foot beside the ball, strike through the middle, head steady, follow through.
- Placement beats power — pick your spot.
- Head steady, eyes on the ball at contact.
- Follow through towards the target.
Drill 2: First-time finishes
A server plays the ball across or back, and the player finishes first time. Builds the sharpness needed for real chances that don't wait around.
Drill 3: Finishing under pressure
Add a recovering defender or a time limit. The player must finish quickly and composedly under pressure — exactly like a real chance in a match.
- Stay composed — don't rush the strike.
- Take the first clear sight of goal.
- Follow up every shot — rebounds are goals.
Coaching points
Keep the volume high — lots of shots, quick restarts, plenty of goals. Confidence in front of goal is built through repetition and success.
