Football Ball Sizes by Age
Using the right ball size for the age matters more than most people think. Here's a simple guide to size 3, 4 and 5 — which age uses which, and which ball to use for different drills.
Why ball size matters
A ball that's too big and heavy for a young player makes everything harder — control, passing, striking — and can hold back their technique and even risk injury. Matching the ball to the age lets players develop good habits with a ball they can actually handle.
The three main sizes
Football uses three main sizes for outfield play:
- Size 3 — ages 5–8. The smallest and lightest, ideal for young players learning control.
- Size 4 — ages 8–12. A step up in size and weight for developing players.
- Size 5 — ages 12 and over. The full adult ball, used from around age 12 to senior.
Size 3 (ages 5–8)
Light and small, so young players can control, dribble and strike it without struggling. Perfect for 3v3 and 4v4 small-sided games where the focus is touches, dribbling and fun.
Size 4 (ages 8–12)
Bigger and heavier than a size 3, matching the growing strength and skill of players around 8–12. Used for 5v5, 7v7 and 9v9 as players move into bigger formats.
Size 5 (ages 12 and over)
The full-size adult ball, used from around age 12 through to senior football, including 11-a-side. By this age players have the strength and technique to handle it.
Which ball for which drill?
Beyond age, a few practical pointers for training:
- Match the ball to the players' age group for all normal drills and games.
- Futsal balls (low bounce) are great for tight technical and control work indoors.
- For young players' technique work, a slightly under-inflated ball can be easier to control.
- Always use enough balls — one between two at most — to keep touches high.
The simple rule
Size 3 up to 8, size 4 from 8 to 12, size 5 from 12 on. Get the ball right and everything else — control, passing, confidence — comes easier.
