From Grassroots to Academy: Building an Affiliate Pathway

Every grassroots club has produced a player good enough for an academy. The question is whether your club has a pathway to help them get there — or whether they slip away unnoticed. Here’s how clubs build real academy relationships.

Why a pathway matters

Ambitious families want to know their talented child has somewhere to go. A club with a genuine academy pathway attracts and retains better players, builds its reputation, and does right by its young talent. A club without one loses its best players to bigger clubs — often for nothing in return.

Get your own house in order first

Academies work with clubs they respect. Before you approach anyone, make sure your own coaching is organised, consistent and professional — a clear curriculum, structured sessions, and players developed to a genuine standard. Academies notice which grassroots clubs produce ready, well-coached players, and those are the clubs they build relationships with.

Build the relationship, not just the ask

Don’t cold-call an academy asking for favours. Build a genuine relationship — invite their scouts to your games, attend their coach-education events, offer to host. Academies value reliable community clubs that develop players properly and communicate professionally. Nurture the relationship over time, exactly as clubs do with player recruitment.

Be honest with families

A pathway must be realistic. Not every keen player will make an academy, and overselling causes heartbreak. Be honest about a child’s level, what an academy involves (the commitment, the drop-out rates), and support families in making the right decision — whether that’s pushing for a trial or staying to enjoy the community game.

Keep developing them while they’re with you

The best thing you can do for a player heading towards an academy is coach them brilliantly while you have them. Professional, progressive sessions that develop real technical and tactical ability give them the best chance — and reflect well on your club when they move on.

Consistency makes you a club academies trust

Academies build pathways with clubs whose coaching they can rely on. A club where every coach works to the same high standard, from the same professional resources, is a club worth affiliating with. Consistency is what earns you a seat at the table.
