Video Analysis in Grassroots Football (Without an Academy Budget)
Video analysis used to be the preserve of academies with big budgets. Not anymore. With a phone and a bit of know-how, any grassroots coach can use video to teach positioning and decision-making. Here’s how to do it on a shoestring.
Why video is so powerful
Players often don’t believe they were out of position until they see it. Video removes the argument — it shows them exactly what happened. A ten-second clip of a defensive shape or a missed run teaches more than ten minutes of a coach explaining it. Seeing is understanding.
You don’t need a big budget
An iPhone on a cheap tripod, positioned high on the halfway line, captures everything you need. If you want more, automated cameras like Veo, or apps like Hudl, make filming and clipping easier — but you can start with the phone in your pocket. The tool matters far less than how you use the footage.
Film from the right angle
Position the camera as high and central as you can — behind the goal or high on the halfway line. A low, pitch-side angle shows the ball but hides the shape; a high, wide angle shows the spaces, the runs and the positioning that you actually want to teach.
Keep clips short and focused
Don’t sit players in front of a full match — they’ll switch off. Pull two or three short clips that make one clear teaching point each: “look at the space here,” “watch this run.” Short, specific and positive keeps their attention and drives the lesson home.
Use it to praise, not just correct
Video isn’t only for pointing out mistakes. Show players doing things well — a great bit of movement, a smart decision — and it reinforces the behaviour and builds confidence. A mix of “look how good this was” and “here’s what we can improve” keeps it positive.
