Attacking Play: How to Coach Your Team to Score More

Everyone loves scoring goals — but attacking well is a skill you can coach. Here's how to help your team create more chances and put more away.

Attacking is more than the striker

Scoring goals starts long before the finish. It's about movement, combinations, width, timing and decisions all over the pitch. Coach your whole team to attack together — not just to lump it to the number nine and hope.

Create space with movement

Space is created by movement. Runs in behind, dropping short, switching play, stretching the pitch wide — all of it pulls defenders around and opens gaps. Coach players to move with purpose, not just stand and wait for the ball.

Combine to break lines

One-twos, third-man runs and overlaps unlock defences no individual can. Coach these combinations in small games where they appear constantly, and reward players for playing through the defence rather than around it.

Attack with width and speed

Stretch defences wide to create space in the middle, then attack quickly — especially in transition, when the opposition is disorganised. The fastest, most direct attacks often come in the seconds after winning the ball.

Coach composed finishing

Chances are wasted without finishing. Practise it: clean striking technique, placement over power, and composure in front of goal. Finishing is a skill that improves with focused, repeated practice.
