How to Coach Girls' Football: A Practical Guide

Coaching girls' football is one of the most rewarding jobs in the game — and with the women's game booming, more coaches are getting involved than ever. Here's how to do it well.

Football is football — with a few important nuances

Let's start with the big one: the fundamentals of coaching girls are exactly the same as coaching boys. Girls want to touch the ball, play games, improve and have fun, just like anyone else. The technical and tactical content doesn't change. What can differ — and it's a generalisation, not a rule — is the environment that helps players thrive.

Research and coach experience suggest many girls respond especially well to a supportive, collaborative environment where relationships and enjoyment are front and centre. Get that culture right and everything else follows.

Build confidence relentlessly

Confidence is rocket fuel for development. Praise effort, normalise mistakes as part of learning, and create an atmosphere where players feel safe to try things and fail. A player who's afraid to make a mistake stops taking risks — and risk-taking is how skills grow.

Small, specific praise works better than vague cheerleading: "great decision to switch the play" beats "well done". It tells the player exactly what to repeat.

Prioritise the group and belonging

Many girls' teams thrive on a strong sense of belonging. Invest in team culture — shared standards, inclusive language, everyone valued whether they're the star or still finding their feet. Players who feel they belong train harder, stay in the game longer and support each other.

Keep it game-based and fun

As with any age or gender, small-sided games are your best friend — maximum touches, constant decisions, plenty of fun. Dress practice up as games, keep the tempo high, and let the game do much of the teaching.

Coach the player, not the stereotype

Every player is an individual. Some are fierce competitors, some are quieter technicians, some are all-action. Avoid assumptions and coach the person in front of you. The best coaches adapt to their players rather than forcing players into a mould.
