How to Get Better at Football: A Player's Guide
Want to improve as a player? Talent helps, but the players who get better are the ones who practise smart and work at it. Here's how to take your game up a level.
Master the ball
Everything starts with your relationship with the ball. Thousands of touches — juggling, dribbling, wall passes, both feet — build the control that everything else depends on. Fifteen minutes a day with a ball will transform your game over a season.
Fix your weak foot
Nothing limits a player like being one-footed. Defenders show good players onto their weak side because they know it's coming. Practise your weaker foot deliberately — passing, controlling, shooting — until it stops being weak. It's the single biggest edge most players are ignoring.
Play as much as you can
Small-sided games, street football, futsal, kickabouts — the more you play in tight spaces, the sharper your control, decisions and awareness become. Unstructured play is where a lot of the best players were made.
Train your game intelligence
Football is played with the head as much as the feet. Scan before you receive, know your next move before the ball arrives, and study the game — watch good players in your position and steal what they do. Reading the game is a skill you can develop.
Look after your body
Fitness, strength and recovery all matter as you progress. Build your engine, warm up properly, and rest — improvement happens when you recover, not just when you train.
