How to Improve Ball Control in Football
Ball control is the foundation of every other skill in football. A good first touch buys time and space; a poor one invites pressure. Here's how to improve it.
Why ball control matters most
Every action in football starts with controlling the ball. Pass, dribble, shoot, turn — all of it depends on a clean first touch. Improve your control and every other part of your game improves with it. It's the highest-value skill to practise.
The keys to a great first touch
A good first touch is directional — it takes the ball into space, away from pressure, ready for the next action. Cushion the ball on contact to keep it close, receive across your body to open up play, and always know where you're going before the ball arrives.
- Directional: touch into space, not just to your feet.
- Cushioned: soft on contact to keep it close.
- Across the body: open up and face forward.
- Aware: scan before you receive.
Drills that build control
Repetition is everything. Practise against a wall (pass, control, repeat), with a partner varying the pass, and in small games where control is tested under pressure. Thousands of quality touches — both feet — is how control becomes automatic.
Add pressure gradually
Groove the technique first with no pressure, then add a defender, a time limit or a smaller space. Controlling the ball cleanly under pressure is what separates good players — but you build it by starting simple and progressing.
