How to Improve Your Football Team’s Fitness
A fit team presses longer, recovers quicker and stays sharp in the final minutes when games are won and lost. But football fitness isn’t about endless laps — it’s about the right kind of work. Here’s how to build a team that lasts 90 minutes.
Football fitness is different
Football isn’t a steady jog — it’s repeated bursts of sprinting, turning and recovering. So training for it with long, slow running misses the point. The best football fitness looks like football: high-intensity efforts with short recoveries, exactly what the game demands. Train the way you play.
Build fitness through the ball
The smartest coaches build fitness into football activities — small-sided games, high-tempo possession, and pressing games get players fit while they improve their football at the same time. Players work harder when there’s a ball and a game than when they’re just running, and the fitness is more relevant.
Use small-sided games as conditioning
A high-intensity 4v4 or 5v5 with short rests is a brilliant conditioning tool. Adjust the area size, the work-to-rest ratio and the rules to dial the intensity up or down. Players get fitter, sharper and more involved — and they enjoy it far more than shuttle runs.
Time it right in the week and season
Hard fitness work belongs earlier in the week, not the night before a game. Across a season, build a base in pre-season, then maintain and sharpen during the campaign. Overloading players when they’re tired leads to injuries and flat performances — recovery is part of fitness.
Don’t forget recovery
Fitness improves during recovery, not just during training. Build in proper cool-downs, sensible rest, and lighter sessions after hard ones. A well-recovered player performs better than an over-trained one, and stays available rather than injured.
Keep it age-appropriate
Young players shouldn’t be doing adult fitness regimes — their conditioning should come almost entirely through fun, ball-based games. Save structured fitness work for older and adult teams, and always prioritise technique and enjoyment for kids.
