How to Improve Your Attacking Play

Every coach wants their team to score more. Better attacking isn't about one star player — it's about movement, width, and getting numbers into the box. Here's how to turn possession into goals.

Stretch the pitch

Attacks die in crowded spaces. Teach your wide players to hug the touchline and your team to use the full width of the pitch. The more you stretch the opponent, the more gaps appear centrally for runners. Width first, then attack the space it creates.

Movement beats standing still

Static forwards are easy to mark. Coach constant movement — checking to the ball, spinning in behind, dragging defenders out of position. A striker who moves creates space even when they don't get the ball.

Get numbers in the box

Crosses and cut-backs are wasted if only one player is in the box. Teach your team to attack with numbers: near post, far post, and one holding the edge for the cut-back. Three runners beat one every time.

Play forward when it's on

Possession only matters if it leads somewhere. Coach players to look forward first — if a penetrating pass is on, play it. Sideways passing is for when the forward option isn't there, not a habit.

Drills that build it

Finish every session with attacking small-sided games and shooting drills so players practise the end product. Overload games (attackers outnumber defenders) build confidence and teach players to exploit an advantage.
