How to Improve Your Centre-Back
A commanding centre-back is the backbone of any team. It’s about reading danger, winning duels and organising those around you — not just being big. Here’s how to develop a defender who dominates.
Read the game and defend the box
The best centre-backs defend problems before they happen — stepping across, cutting out the pass, being first to the ball. Coach anticipation and good positioning so they’re always in the right place.
Win your duels
Centre-backs must win their 1v1s and their headers. Drill jockeying, timing the tackle, and attacking the ball in the air — jump to win it, don’t wait for it. Strength comes from timing and positioning as much as size.
Play out from the back
Modern centre-backs start attacks. Coach composure on the ball, scanning before receiving, and accurate passing under pressure — short to feet or a long switch. Calm defenders build calm teams.
Organise and communicate
A centre-back sees the whole game. Teach them to talk constantly — push the line up, step out, pick up runners — and to lead the back line. A vocal centre-back organises the whole defence.
Drills that build it
Defending-the-box scenarios (2v2, 3v3); heading and aerial-duel drills; playing-out-from-the-back games; stepping-and-covering line drills with a partner.
