How to Improve Your Team's Defending
A team that defends well loses fewer games — simple as that. Improving your defence isn't about parking the bus; it's about shape, communication and a few habits every player can learn. Here's how to make your team genuinely hard to play against.
Defend as a unit, not as individuals
The single biggest jump in any team's defending comes from moving together. When the ball goes wide, the whole team shifts across; when it comes back inside, everyone slides back. Teach players to stay connected — no big gaps between the lines — so opponents never find space to play through.
A useful cue: "if you can't see your teammate either side of you, you're too far apart."
Get the defensive line right
A back four should hold a flat line and step up together to squeeze space and catch attackers offside. The whole line moves on the command of one player — usually a centre-back. Practise stepping up and dropping as a unit until it's automatic.
Pressure the ball, don't dive in
Good defenders delay rather than dive in. Teach the first defender to close the space quickly, then slow down, stay on their feet, and force the attacker one way — usually towards the touchline or their weaker foot. The second defender covers behind. Winning the ball comes second to not getting beaten.
This is exactly the kind of shape you can rehearse in the builder: set a low block or defensive shape and see how the unit slides.
Communication wins defensive battles
The best defences talk constantly: "man on," "time," "step up," "my ball." Make talking a rule in training, not an optional extra. A quiet defence is a disorganised defence.
Drills that build it
Work backwards from match situations: 2v2 and 3v3 in tight areas to teach pressure and cover; back-four stepping drills for the line; small-sided games with a rule that the defending team must win the ball back within ten seconds to sharpen pressing.
