How to Improve Your Midfield

Games are won and lost in midfield. A midfield that controls the ball, wins it back quickly and links defence to attack turns an average team into a good one. Here's how to make yours dominate the middle.

Win the numbers game in the middle

Midfield is about numbers and angles. Teach your midfielders to create passing triangles so there's always an easy option, and to recognise when they're outnumbered so they can drop a player in to help. Control the centre and you control the game.

Keep the ball moving

Slow, safe passing lets opponents get set. Coach one and two-touch play under pressure so the ball moves faster than defenders can shift. The aim: pass, move, offer a new angle — never stand still after passing.

The defensive midfielder is your anchor

A holding midfielder who screens the back four is worth their weight in gold. Their job is to sit, intercept, and break up attacks before they reach the defence. Teach them to read danger and stay disciplined rather than chasing the ball everywhere.

Transition — the moment the ball turns over

The best midfields react instantly when possession changes. Win it? Look forward immediately. Lose it? Press to win it back within seconds before the opponent can settle. Rehearse this with small-sided games that reward fast reactions.

Drills that build it

Rondos (a circle of players keeping the ball from one or two in the middle) are the classic midfield drill — they teach angles, first touch and quick decisions. Add positional games in a marked grid where midfielders must find the free player to progress.
