How to Improve Your Shooting and Finishing

Missing chances loses games. Good finishing is a skill you can coach — it's about technique, composure and repetition, not luck. Here's how to help your players put the ball in the net more often.

Technique first

Clean striking comes from the basics: a solid plant foot beside the ball, head steady and over the ball, and contact through the middle with the laces for power or the inside for placement. Drill the fundamentals before worrying about power.

Placement beats power

Teach players that a well-placed side-foot into the corner beats a wild blast every time. The corners of the goal are the hardest areas for a keeper to reach. Aim, don't just hit.

Composure in front of goal

Panic ruins finishing. Coach players to take a touch to set themselves, pick their spot, and stay calm. Repetition in training builds the composure that shows up in matches — the more shots they take in practice, the calmer they are in games.

Finish from realistic situations

Static shooting drills only go so far. Add movement, a defender, and a keeper so players finish the way they'll have to in a match — off a pass, under pressure, first time or after a touch.

Drills that build it

Rapid-fire shooting drills for technique and repetition; 1v1-versus-keeper for composure; crossing-and-finishing drills so strikers practise attacking balls into the box. Keep score to add match-like pressure.
