Range of Passing Drills for Football
A player who can pass short and long controls the game. These drills build the full range — from crisp short passing to switching the play across the pitch.
Why range of passing matters
The best passers can pick the right pass for the moment — a short one to keep possession, a driven pass to break a line, a lofted switch to change the point of attack. These drills build the whole range.
Drill 1: Short passing accuracy
Crisp, accurate short passing under a light time limit. The foundation — you can't play long well if you can't play short cleanly.
- Firm, accurate passes into the correct foot.
- Head up to pick the pass.
- Quick release — don't take too many touches.
Drill 2: The driven pass
A firm, flat pass over 15–25 m to break a line or reach a team-mate quickly. Coach striking through the middle of the ball with pace and accuracy.
Drill 3: Switching play
A lofted or driven pass from one side of the pitch to the other, changing the point of attack. Practise the technique, then use it in a game to exploit space on the far side.
- Look up and spot the switch before you receive.
- Weight it so your team-mate can control it.
- Switch to where the space is, away from pressure.
Coaching points
Progress from unopposed technique to opposed games so players learn not just how to play each pass, but when. Reward good decisions, not just good technique.
