Using Player Feedback to Shape Your Sessions

A session plan is a starting point, not a script. The best coaches read how players respond and adapt to what they actually need. Here's how to use player feedback to make every session better.

A plan is a starting point, not a script

A good session plan gives you structure, drills and a clear objective — but no plan survives contact with a real group of players untouched. The best coaching happens when you read what's actually in front of you and adapt. Your plan tells you where to start; your players tell you where to go.

What 'player feedback' really means

It isn't just asking players what they think (though that helps). Most feedback is what you see and hear during the session:

Reading the session as it happens

Watch the players, not just the drill. If half the group is standing in a queue, the organisation needs changing. If everyone's scoring too easily, raise the challenge. If they're frustrated and failing, simplify it or break it down. The drill is a tool — your job is to make it work for these players, today.

Adapting on the fly

This is where coaching comes alive. A few simple ways to adapt in the moment:

Asking players directly

Simple questions build understanding and give you feedback: 'What worked there?', 'What could you try next time?', 'Where was the space?'. Players who are asked to think, learn more — and their answers tell you what to coach next.

Why this matters

Coaching the players in front of you — not just delivering a plan — is what separates good sessions from great ones. A ready-made plan frees you from the admin so you can spend your attention where it counts: watching, listening and responding to your players.
