Developing a Winning Mentality in Young Players
A winning mentality isn't about winning at all costs — it's about resilience, focus and the drive to improve. Here's how to develop it in young players the right way.
What a winning mentality really is
It's easy to misread this. A winning mentality in young players isn't ruthlessness or winning every game — it's the mindset that keeps them working, bouncing back from setbacks and striving to get better. That mindset serves them for life, not just on the pitch.
Build a growth mindset
The foundation is helping players believe they can improve through effort. Praise effort, progress and good decisions — not just talent or results. A player who believes they can get better, will.
- Praise effort and improvement, not just winning.
- Treat mistakes as part of learning, never something to fear.
- Celebrate progress — where they were vs where they are now.
Develop resilience
Football is full of setbacks — losses, mistakes, tough games. Resilient players recover and go again. Coach them to see setbacks as normal and temporary, and model it yourself: how you react to a defeat teaches them how to react.
Focus on what they control
A strong mentality comes from focusing on effort, attitude and preparation — the things a player controls — rather than the result or the referee. Coach them to give their best regardless of the scoreline.
Winning the right way
Competing hard and wanting to win is healthy. Winning at all costs — or crushing young players over results — is not, and it drives kids out of the game. Keep the balance: compete fiercely, respect opponents, and never let a result define a child's worth.
